How to: your first VAT201

The job: the VAT201 stops being an afternoon of spreadsheet archaeology. 360books is a preparation aid — the figures are computed and cross-referenced here, and you file on eFiling.

1. Set the profile once — the SARS page asks for your VAT registration, category (A/B is the usual two-monthly cycle) and number. This drives the whole calendar: due dates appear on the dashboard and in email reminders automatically. 2. Capture normally all period. There is no "VAT work" to do during the period — every invoice line and bill line carries its VAT rate, and the return builds itself from what you captured. Zero-rated and exempt lines: just use the right rate on the line. 3. When the period closes, open SARS → VAT201. You get the return laid out field by field — output VAT from sales, input VAT from purchases, with the breakdown behind every field clickable, so "where does this number come from?" has an answer. 4. Run the reconciliation. The VAT recon compares the return against the ledger's VAT control accounts — if someone edited an old invoice after last period's filing, this is where it shows before SARS finds it. 5. File on eFiling — copy the figures across (they're laid out in eFiling's order), submit, and pay by the deadline. 6. Record it — mark the period filed and record the payment in 360books; the deadline board goes quiet, and next period starts clean. If SARS ever asks questions, the one-click audit pack bundles the period's documents.

Provisional tax (IRP6) and the ITR14 computation live on the same page and work the same way — capture normally, read the figures, file on eFiling. Full detail: SARS & tax.
