How PAYE is calculated in South Africa
PAYE (Pay-As-You-Earn) is the income tax your employer withholds from your salary each month and pays to SARS. It's based on your annualised taxable income, the SARS tax tables, and the rebates you qualify for.
2026 tax brackets (individuals)
| Taxable income (per year) | Rate |
|---|---|
| R0 – R237,100 | 18% |
| R237,101 – R370,500 | R42,678 + 26% of the amount above R237,100 |
| R370,501 – R512,800 | R77,362 + 31% |
| R512,801 – R673,000 | R121,475 + 36% |
| R673,001 – R857,900 | R179,147 + 39% |
| R857,901 – R1,817,000 | R251,258 + 41% |
| R1,817,001 and above | R644,489 + 45% |
Rebates and the tax threshold
Everyone gets the primary rebate of R17,235. If you're 65+ you add R9,444, and 75+ adds a further R3,145. Because of the primary rebate, you only start paying PAYE once you earn above roughly R95,750 a year (about R7,979 a month) if you're under 65.
UIF
UIF is 1% of your salary (your employer pays another 1%), capped at a salary of R17,712 per month — so the most you'll pay is R177.12 a month.
Frequently asked questions

Use the calculator above — enter R30,000 per month. It applies the 2026 tables, your primary rebate and UIF to show your exact take-home.
Does this include medical aid credits?
Yes — enter the number of people on your medical aid and the calculator applies the medical scheme fees tax credit (R364 for the first two members, R246 for each additional).
Is this the same as my IRP5?
